Salon software vs register and Excel: an honest look
Plenty of good salons run on a register and a calculator. It costs nothing and never needs charging. The question isn’t whether a register works. It’s what it lets slip: the bill nobody wrote, the commission sum that started an argument, the ₹500 the drawer was short. Here is salon software vs a register and Excel, fairly.

What a register and Excel do well
The register
No cost, nothing to learn, no login, no internet, no power needed. Every staff member already knows how to use it, and it is hard to “lose” a page by mistake.
Excel
Free or nearly free, adds up columns for you, and bends to whatever your salon does. Many owners keep a neat monthly sheet of sales and salaries for years.
Both
You own them outright. No subscription, no vendor to trust, no app to update. For a one-chair, cash-only shop that isn’t registered for GST, that can be enough.

Salon software vs register and Excel, job by job
| The job | Register | Excel | Salon software |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bill numbers that never skip or repeat | By hand; easy to skip | By hand; easy to overwrite | Given by the system, per financial year |
| GST worked out on each bill | Calculator | A formula, if set up right | Worked out on every line |
| Commission per stylist | Month-end sums | Sums, if every line has a name | From each service on each bill |
| What should be in the drawer | Added up at night | If someone types it in | Shown live; counted against it |
| Reminders before appointments | — | — | Sent the day before and on the day |
| A client’s history and dues | Turn the pages | Search, if one sheet | On her profile, at every branch |
| Package sessions left | A card in a drawer | A separate sheet | Shown at the till |
| A copy if it’s lost | — | If someone backs it up | Nightly backups, copied off the server |
“Salon software” here means what Frizzi does. Other salon software may differ; ask.
Where it costs you
Five quiet leaks in a register salon
None of these shows up as a loss on any page. That’s the problem.
Missed bills and cash gaps
A busy evening, a regular who “will pay next time”, a threading nobody wrote down. A register only knows what was written in it, so a missed bill is invisible. And without a figure for what should be in the drawer, a ₹500 gap is just “roughly right”.
In Frizzi every bill has a number and nothing is deleted. Owners are told when a client was marked “here” but never billed. At closing, the cash tally shows what should be there and says Matches, Short or Over. See how to close the day.
- Bills are cancelled with a reason, never torn out
- Dues listed, biggest first
- Short-count note to the owner

Commission sums and no-shows
At month end someone adds up each stylist’s services from the register, and someone else disagrees. In software each service on a bill carries who did it, so the earnings report is the same number for everyone. Try our commission calculator to see the sum.
No-shows cost a chair for an hour. A register can’t remind anyone. Frizzi sends a reminder the day before and again a few hours before, in the Frizzi client app (coming soon) or on WhatsApp from your own WhatsApp Business number; read how to cut no-shows.
- Commission on services after discount, without GST
- Staff see their own month
- “Missed 2 appointments before” warning

GST numbering
The GST point most register salons miss
If your salon is GST-registered, each tax invoice needs a serial number that is unique for the financial year and runs in order, with no more than 16 characters. A hand-numbered book that skips a page, or two counters writing the same number, is hard to explain to your CA later. Refunds and cancellations should go through a credit note, not a crossed-out line.
Salon services are taxed at 5% (CGST 2.5% + SGST 2.5%) since 22 September 2025. In Excel that is one formula, but it has to be right on every row, and it has to handle prices that include GST. Software does it on every line and keeps the numbers locked. Our guides on the salon GST invoice format and GST on salon services go further; the GST calculator splits any bill.

FAQ
Questions
Is a register still fine for a small salon?
For a one-chair, cash-only shop that isn’t GST-registered and has a handful of clients a day, often yes. Once you have staff on commission, a GST number, bookings or prepaid packages, the sums and the gaps grow faster than a register can keep up.
Can I import my clients from Excel?
Not yet. Frizzi imports your service menu from Excel or CSV. Clients are added as they come in; their history starts with their first bill in Frizzi.
Should I run the register and software side by side?
Not for long. Writing every bill twice doubles the work and the mistakes. Use the register only to look up old history, and bill everything new in the software.
What if the internet goes down?
Frizzi keeps billing. Cash, UPI and card bills are saved on the device and sent when the connection returns, with their real date and time. Wallet, packages and dues wait for the internet.
What does it cost compared with a register?
A register is almost free. Frizzi Basic is ₹99 a branch a month plus GST, with unlimited staff and no share of your bills. You get 35 days of Pro free first, no card, to see if it earns its keep.
What if I want to go back to Excel?
Owners can “Download all my data” at any time, on any plan: one ZIP of CSV files that open in Excel, with clients, bills, staff, attendance and more.
